Summertime, summertime, summertime. You might think it was the lazy days of summer but the Ladies of Charity (LOC) of North Beach never rest on their laurels. They were busy, busy, busy.
We managed to gain the help of Serenity Farms who provided home grown foods to the LOC pantry on a weekly basis. We drive down to the farm and they load us up with whatever they are harvesting that week. Sometimes it’s squash or cucumbers or watermelons or a combination. They are an amazing group and are always very helpful and the LOC are very grateful as are our pantry clients!!
We are also receiving a food “drop” from Farming 4 Hunger of fresh fruits and vegetables once a month until October to benefit our Food Pantry clients and those of the community that are in need. This requires planning, advertising, set-up, packaging and distribution, and then clean up. In July and August we received 5,000 lbs. of food to distribute. It was very hot and humid but we still had a good turnout of LOC volunteers and over 100 clients.
Another activity the Ladies are currently involved in is a “Crab Basket” raffle. The Ladies are selling raffle tickets at church after Mass and at local locations throughout the area and at our local Farmer’s Market. We raise money for all of our many projects like our Backpack Program.
We also gathered school supplies/backpacks so we could provide local children with backpacks and the tools necessary to be successful in the classroom. We distributed over 146 backpacks.
