Readings:
Micah 5: 1-4a, Psalm 80, Hebrews 10: 5-10, Luke 1: 39-45
Reflection:
The readings for the final Sunday of Advent repeat the promises fulfilled in the Savior:
- He shall stand firm and shepherd his flock by the strength of the Lord; his greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth; he shall be peace. (Micah 5)
- Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved. (Psalm 80)
- Christ came into the world said: “Behold, I come to do your will.” (Hebrews 10)
- Filled with the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth proclaims: “Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” (Luke 1)
Speaking to a people living in war and violence, the prophet Micah encouraged them to trust in God’s presence and peace.
Today we reflect upon our cities and schools torn by violence and anger. We are shocked and grieved that the action of one disturbed young man can shatter the lives, hopes and dreams of children and teachers. Yet the love of God is present in the tragedy and promises peace.
Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.
In the Gospel, Elizabeth recognizes that Mary’s faithful response brings salvation to all humanity. Elizabeth proclaims: “Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”
Today we see the faces of suffering women: hungry, abused, ignored, trafficked, and shattered by war. They are the faces of the love of God among us.
Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.

In her retreat meditations in July 1813, Elizabeth Ann Seton penned her thoughts on peace:
Peace is mutual unrestrained kindness, unwearied forbearance, and mutual tender support to proceed together in one only mind. (1)
